HILT Picnic

Friday, 29 November 2013 15:06

PAINT THE REFUGE –Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 9-2pm

Plein Air Painters of Hawaii (PAPOH) members are invited to set up their easels at the Waihee Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge on December 7, 2013 as part of Hawaii Land Trust’s (HILT) annual picnic.

HILT’s annual picnic is from 11am until 2pm and includes guided hikes, activities and lunch.  Artists are asked to arrive at 9 , so that you may begin your paintings and have something to show and continue painting if you’d like to join in the fun.

Artists are greatly encouraged to become members of the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust as an expression of support for the work being done to protect open spaces and view corridors throughout the state.  Please visit for more information. Annual membership is only $25.  There will be similar events on HILT protected lands on all islands in the future.

PAPOH’s mission statement is to foster and promote the advancement of plein air painting in Hawaii.  It is in our best interest to help preserve beautiful places in Hawaii.  Painting these places is a great contribution to society, but the loss of those beautiful vistas will leave us with much less of nature’s beauty to capture.  Susan Kean and Jan Bushart see the partnership between PAPOH and HILT as a way to continue the longstanding tradition of painters contributing to the preservation of land.  If this partnership is well received, we may partner with HILT for future events on Maui and other islands as well.  HILT has holdings on Hawaii Island, Maui, Oahu, Kauai and Molokai.

HILT’s annual picnic is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful refuge and meet some of their supporters/members.

Please RSVP by December 1, 2013 to

Phase 1: March 11 - 13, 2013. $255 Limited to 12 students **ONLY 2 SPACES LEFT

Phase 2: March 14 - 15, 2013 $170 Limited to 10 students **ONLY 2 SPACES LEFT

Please email us at immmediately if you'd like to join!

The focus of this workshop is to learn to create a strong foundation around which to build your paintings, using 2 basic visual approaches that focus on the idea of using big value shapes(groups of similar values)in order  to simplify and design the 2 dimensional space. From there we will explore ways  to finish the painting by deciding where to break down those big shapes into smaller shapes of color and value. It is  of great importance in plein air painting that artists get their ideas down very quickly because of the changing light conditions and weather concerns.Utilizing these two approaches will allow students to get it down faster, giving you a "road map" to guide you through the painting process so you don't lose your way and start chasing the light mid painting when the light or weather has changed. This will also allow for a stronger structure and a more dynamic painting in the end.

Definitely check out Susie's website:
