Katya was born in Moscow, Russia in 1981. She took to painting and drawing early in life and attended a children’s art school in Moscow for 9 years where she received a rigorous training in painting, drawing, composition and art history.
After completing her university studies in linguistics, Katya moved to Hyderabad, India where she taught French in an international school. Her move to Seattle in 2008 prompted her return to drawing and painting. She discovered life drawing at Gage Academy of Art, and the open studio provided her with a much-needed practice to reanimate and hone her drawing skills. At Gage Katya took a few figure painting classes over the years combined with a regular attendance of open studio sessions.
Her introduction to plein air painting happened in 2014 with Jim Lamb’s workshop in Port Angeles, which opened her eyes to the many challenges and rewards of direct painting from nature.
While in Seattle area, Katya was actively showing her work in local businesses and Cole Gallery in Edmonds, WA. In several years following 2013 – the official start of her artistic career – she has built a versatile portfolio of figurative work, studio still life and urban paintings, plein air studies and a successful watercolor series featuring shelter animals up for adoption.
In 2015 Katya made several trips to Maui and had her heart captured by beautiful Haha, which she has recently made her new home. Katya’s intention is to spend her time here painting the majestic and abundant beauty of this special place, both en plein air and in her studio, constantly grow as an artist and learn from the very best.
