I love to draw or paint from life. My earliest drawing classes were from life. I tried painting landscapes on location and I loved the spontaneous quality of those paintings. They were fresh and alive expressions. I continued painting from life long before I ever heard the term ‘plein air’.
Today painting and drawing from life continue to be the foundation of my art making. I allow myself to experiment with varying subjects, colors, compositions and mediums to see where my muse will take me. This process helps me grow as an artist and person. These sparks of inspiration lead me into unexpected growth and development. Some of these sketches evolve into refined studio works.
Landscapes and seascapes are still a mainstay of my interest and activity. I always carry a small painting kit when I travel and have painted all over Europe, and the US. Recent painting adventures include rafting down the Grand Canyon and wandering the streets of San Francisco.
Born in upstate New York, I grew up in Chicago and later St. Louis. In high school I became intrigued with architectural design and drawing and thought I might become an architect. College studio art classes convinced me to become an art major at the University of Arizona where I received a BFA degree.
I spent many years after college working in the aerospace industry while pursuing my artistic journey in my spare time. My career led me to the California Bay area. I loved painting the California hills and seascapes north to Mendicino and south through Big Sur.
In 1990 I made my first trip to Kauai and was struck by the island’s dramatic beauty. It helped that my wife was from Kauai too. We moved to Kauai in 1998.
I have studied with some of the best painters in America and my paintings have been accepted in major national juried exhibitions and purchased by many private collectors. I have been designated a ‘Signature Member’ of several professional arts organizations and my artwork has been featured in well known art magazines.
