Lured by the splendor of the Hawaiian Islands, Mike Carroll left Chicago and moved to Lana`i to pursue his life-long passion for art and nature. His original oil paintings and prints celebrate Hawaii and invite the viewer to explore her enchanting beauty.
Mike double-majored in Art and Biology at Western Maryland College, earning a B.A. with Honors in Art. He then attended The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was awarded a Master’s degree in Medical Illustration from the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine.
Mike enjoyed a successful twenty-year career as a professional artist in Chicago. During that time he received national recognition for both his medical and non-medical art and had work featured in the prestigious PRINT Regional Design Atlas and Communication Arts magazines.
Since moving to Lana’i, Mike’s fine art has been juried into major competitions such as ArtMaui and all 3 statewide Schaefer Portrait Challenges (one of only 6 artists with that honor). He has been selected as a Signature Member of both major outdoor painting groups in Hawaii: Plein Air Painters of Hawaii and “Islanders”, and has received awards at juried exhibitions held by both groups. In 2010, Mike was elected as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Hawaii State Art Museum in Honolulu.
Mike and his wife, Kathy, can usually be found at their gallery on 7th Street in historic Lanai City.
